Job:

F1 Car Model

Location:

Worldwide

Materials:

Timber, PU Foam, Fiberglass

This full size model of the McLaren F1 Car is also a 3D projection surface; a computer generated animation is distorted so that it can be projected onto the car surface, bringing the car to life with promotional footage, spinning wheels and a driver. A tight deadline meant we sympathetically simplified the CAD model to make the machining quicker, but without losing the overall shape. We machined the sub-structure in timber and the body of the car in PU foam. The parts were assembled by our team and sprayed with a hard wearing polyester paint, carefully rubbed down and the seams filled. The tires were turned in plaster using a CNC profile; often traditional methods are still the best! These were then moulded and cast in Fiberglass. The car is currently on exhibit; watch the Youtube video below to see the finished result!
