In collaboration with Scott Fleary we embarked upon this ambitious project for the London 2012 Olympics, making 25 Podiums of various sizes and 450 Medal Presentation Trays.
We were contracted to make the facias of the Podiums. Using the concept model designed by young graduates from the RCA, we refined the CAD drawing and scaled it to work with the various sizes of the Podiums required. Once this was resolved, the CAD model was sectioned into machineable sized shapes, allowing for where the Podium would 'split' as it needed to be assembled within a matter of minutes. We then CNC machined the design in Ebalta board. Our modelmaking team then assembled these pieces and hand finished the surfaces to remove the tooling marks. Fiberglass moulds were then taken from these Ebalta 'patterns' with special care taken to keep the edges crisp and stright. Then production began, casting out the multiple parts also in Fiberglass, which were then hand finished and painted with a hard wearing 2-pac paint. The final detail was the logos, which were made form laser cut perspex and steel.
We were also contracted to design and make the Medal presentation trays based upon the faceted design of the Podiums. Follow the link to see how we made the Medal trays.
